Zamboanga Parliamentary Debate Union’s only high school contingent – the Ateneo Debate Congress (AdZU HS) joined the biggest annual national high school tournament in the Philippines hosted by Ateneo Debate Society (Ateneo de Manila University) held last November 2-5, 2012 at the Ateneo de Manila University.
Out of 155 teams, AdZU A composed of Kurt Recinto and Justin Tan advanced to the final series breaking 23rd after seven intense preliminary rounds. The team reached until the Quarter Finals of the tournament debating on the motion ‘TH celebrates the decline of the United States of America’s global influence’ as Opening Opposition debating against SR B on Opening Government, XS A on Closing Government and MC C on Closing Opposition. AdZU A was also the only provincial/non-Manila team to reach the Quarter Finals of the tournament.
The rest of the contingent was composed of Debra Ponce and Fatima Juaini as AdZU B, Janna Saavedra and Glize Reambonanza as AdZU C, Gia Somblingo and Ian Calzada as AdZU D and Aaron Joe and Cathy Elago as AdZU E. Recinto and Tan were also the only non-Luzon speakers who were part of the top 50 debaters based on the tabulations, Recinto being 11th and Tan on the 27th.
Xavier School’s team A composed of Donald Felbaum and Raynard Lao won the championship for this year while Miguel Ventura of Ateneo High School A was the overall best speaker of the tournament. Congratulations! (Recinto-ADC/ZPDUSec)
